Caring for a pet in Vietnam as an expat: A guide

Hình ảnh
Throughout my entire life, I have always been against having a pet. I used to frown upon and make comments about those “crazy” people who bring their dogs or cats everywhere with them. However, a few months ago, my wife surprised me with a six-week-old dog named Mun. This brought up a new question for me: how do foreigners take care of their pets in Vietnam? There is no doubt that every country has different cultural norms when it comes to pets, whether it’s in cafes, restaurants, offices, or shopping malls. But I had no idea how I would take care of a dog in an apartment in Ho Chi Minh City. My initial concern was about my apartment. Every floor of the building has a sign that says no dogs or cats allowed. However, in true Vietnamese spirit, this seems to be a rule that is not really enforced. While it’s clear that the management does not allow dogs or cats, almost every other apartment seems to have one. From what I gather, this rule is only enforced if there are complaints. Until ...

Enjoying Ho Chi Minh City in the Rain: Tips for a Perfect Rainy Day Experience

Hình ảnh
The question that is often asked is: how can one enjoy Ho Chi Minh City when they know they will have to deal with rain? Well, there is good news. The rain in Ho Chi Minh City is quite predictable during about 80 percent of the wet season. Different regions in Vietnam have different wet seasons, but in Ho Chi Minh City, you can expect an afternoon storm to roll in anytime after 2:00 pm. These storms, especially the heavy ones, usually only last for an hour or so before the skies clear up and everything returns to normal. Many locals simply plan their day around the rain. In fact, when the rain is most predictable, locals rarely take out their raincoats because they are able to stay indoors during the short periods of precipitation. However, this can also lead to major traffic congestion when everyone leaves work at the same time after the rain has passed. Commuters ride in the rain in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, May 25, 2020.
